Ross Ulbricht Makes First Public Appearance Since Prison Release at Bitcoin 2025

Ross Ulbricht, founder of the notorious Silk Road marketplace, gave his first speech in public since being freed from prison earlier this year. 

Ulbricht delivered a speech at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, where he shared thanks, optimism, and a vision for the future of cryptocurrencies. 

For founding Silk Road, a dark-market that allowed anonymous sales of illegal items using Bitcoin, he was receiving a double life sentence plus 40 years without the possibility of parole. 

In January 2025, Ulbricht received a complete and unconditional pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump, fulfilling a pledge that had gathered support among pro-crypto and libertarian groups. 

A Message of Freedom, Decentralization, and Unity

"I'm free, and this is because of you," Ulbricht said emotionally as he began his verdict, speaking to a crowded room of Bitcoin enthusiasts and ardent supporters of his release. 

He talked about how the crypto community's persistent backing helped him get through the most difficult moments of his confinement. 

His speech's primary focus was on three fundamental ideas: unity, decentralization, and freedom. 

Ulbricht highlighted that although he was free, the fight for human freedom in general and the online world in particular was far from ended. 

“To bitcoin advocates,” he said, “freedom is the foundation. Decentralization is how we preserve it. And unity is what will push us forward.”  

He even drew a symbolic comparison to wasp nests he had to remove, explaining how decentralization without unity can still fall to a coordinated threat. 

While he was In prison, he learned that authorities often encourage division among inmates, but that unity earns respect and power. 

Advocates at the conference interpreted his address as confirmation of crypto's deeper roots in liberty, rights for all, and institutional reform, and it acted as both a personal milestone and a broader rallying cry for the movement. 

Even though Ulbricht's history is still controversial, his appearance marks the beginning of a new era in which he aims to change the discourse from a topic of punishment to one of purpose and effect to isolation. 

Whether he takes on an active position in crypto moving forward remains to be observed, but one thing is clear: Ross Ulbricht is back, and he’s exercising his voice.
